Ultrasonic welding is a manufacturing technique used to join two materials together. The first patent for welding metal objects using this process was awarded in 1960. Five years later, engineers discovered that sound waves could weld non-metal materials as well. The technique uses ultrasonic, high-frequency acoustic waves instead of heat or electricity. As two components are joined under pressure, the ultrasonic welder emits sound waves that travel through the materials.

When the waves locate the contact point, they cause the materials to vibrate, which generates friction, creating the heat that makes the components melt. After the waves are finished, the parts form a resilient bond as they cool and harden. This process does not require soldering or the use of metal fasteners, adhesives or other binding materials, such as thread.

Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) - Urethanes were the first major elastomers that could be processed by thermoplastic methods. TPU do not have quite the heat resistance and compression-set resistance of the thermoset type of polyurethanes but most other properties are similar. Thermoplastic polyurethanes come in a wide range of hardness grades. Among elastomers, urethanes have outstanding abrasion resistance, low temperature flexibility is good, oil resistance is excellent, and urethanes rank among the best for load-bearing capability. Additives can improve dimensional stability and heat resistance; reduce friction, and increase flame retardancy, fungus resistance, and weatherability.

Urethanes are a reaction product of a di-isocyanate and long and short chain polyether, polyester, or caprolactone glycols. The polyether types are slightly more expensive and have better hydrolytic stability and low-temperature flexibility than the polyester types. However, mechanical properties of the polyester type are generally higher. The caprolactones offer a good compromise between the ether and ester types.

Thermoplastic Elastomers (TPE) – TPE is a family of polymers that can be repeatedly stretched without permanently deforming the shape of the part. Unlike rubber-like elastomers, they do not require curing or vulcanization, as they are true thermoplastics.

Thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) may be processed by conventional thermoplastic techniques such as injection molding, extrusion and blow molding. Thermoplastic elastomers have replaced rubber in many applications, most importantly the automotive industry. There are six main thermoplastic elastomer groups found commercially; styrenic block copolymers, polyolefin blends (TPO), elastomeric alloys, thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU), thermoplastic copolyesters and thermoplastic polyamides.

Frame projection screens are generally better for dedicated viewing areas. These screens do not roll away; they are a permanent fixture in the room. As the fixed frame screen does not roll the material, the life is generally a little longer, with less stretching over time. The downside to this type of screen is it is always on show and therefore can become dirty overtime if people, particularly children, touch the surface.

Starting fires is an important preparedness skill, but there is no way that I’m going to get a fire going by rubbing sticks together. Give me a magnifying glass or a Fresnel Lens and I’ll be cooking in no time.

"As our apprentices are still in the handwork phase of their training they unfortunately cannot use the bow saw as much as they might like to. We have to be uncompromising about this facet of the training as relaxing rules can become a slippery slope. On the contrary, a coping saw could cut these curves but it would not be very accurate and would be hard work. The correct tool for the woodworking project is a frame saw which is how it would have been done back in the past. The saw cuts quite aggressively and makes short work of the cuts required. However, it does take some getting used to."
